Granular Matter Perspective of Asphalt Pavement Materials: Theory, Methodology and Progress

http://zgglxb.chd.edu.cn/EN/abstract/abstract4453.shtml

Asphalt mixture is a kind of granular pavement materials which is dominated by granular aggregates in volume and exhibits obvious time-temperature dependency. Recognizing and understanding of asphalt mixture from the perspective of granular matter is the basic foundation of approaching and clarifying its matter attributes and behavior characteristics. This paper attempts to clarify the granular matter nature of asphalt mixture materials based on the theories of amorphous material and their glass transition as well as granular materials and the jamming transition models. It introduced the concept and connotation of granular matter materials, elucidated the granular matter attributes of asphalt mixture, reviewed the advances in the research of granular pavement materials, concluded the four essential features of granular pavement materials (geometric feature, packing effect, interfacial feature, and rheological feature), and discussed the future research directions of granular pavement materials. The results show that the behavior characteristics of asphalt and its effect on the whole system of asphalt mixture can be identified from the perspective of amorphous materials. The research of amorphous materials should be carried out in both the multiple individual scales and a coupling of them. The future research concerns include revealing the evolution rule of the microstructure of asphalt mixture in the process of jamming transition from both time and space dimensions, and exploiting a deeper understanding of the rheological behavior of asphalt mixture. Clarifying the conditions of stable packing and methods of high-efficiency packing for asphalt mixture from the perspective of granular material and multi-scale methodology, and identifying the thixotropic mechanism of asphalt mixture jamming under different working conditions. Re-understanding the rheological process of asphalt mixture subject to the different temperature, packing density and stress mode conditions, and establishing the jamming phase diagram of asphalt mixture covering the actual pavement service conditions.

Research on the Optical Properties and Cooling Performance of a Novel Optical Shielding Coating for Asphalt Pavement

http://zgglxb.chd.edu.cn/EN/abstract/abstract4454.shtml

To lower the temperature of asphalt pavements in summer and alleviate the urban heat island effect, cesium tungsten bronze nanoparticles (Cs0.3WO3) were incorporated into epoxy resin to prepare a cooling coating for pavement optical shielding. The optical properties, cooling performance, and cooling mechanism of the coating were analyzed systematically. Firstly, surface modification of Cs0.3WO3 nanoparticles and preparation process optimization of coatings were performed to prepare an optical shielding coating with high uniformity. The dispersion of Cs0.3WO3 particles and their distribution in the coating before and after optimization were compared and analyzed. Secondly, the optical properties (including reflectivity (R) and transmittance (T)) and cooling performance (including maximum cooling value (Cmax) and average cooling value (Cm)) of the coatings with different Cs0.3WO3 content were tested, and the change law of optical properties and cooling performance of the coatings were studied. Then, the optical indexes determining the cooling performance of the coating were confirmed, and the correlation between the cooling performance and dominating optical indexes was established, and the cooling mechanism of the coating was clarified. Thirdly, shielding rate (S), is proposed as a simpler and more suitable index to quantitatively characterize the shielding performance of the coating, and the change of the cooling performance of the coating with this index was studied. Finally, the bonding strength between the coating and pavement surface, skid-resistance of the coated specimen, and wear resistance of the coating were tested by laboratory experiments. The results show that Cs0.3WO3 surface modification and preparation process optimization of coatings can reduce the amount and volume of aggregate and improve the dispersion of Cs0.3WO3 in the coating. T and R of the coating decrease with increased Cs0.3WO3 content, and Cmax and Cm increase with increasing Cs0.3WO3 content in the coating. T is a dominated index affecting the cooling performance of the coating, which is linearly negatively correlated with Cmax and Cm. Based on the optical characteristics of the coating prepared in this study, S is more suitable than T as the key optical performance index of the coating, and S increases with increasing Cs0.3WO3 content and has a positive linear correlation with Cmax and Cm. The 48-hour bond strength between No. 8 coating and asphalt concrete surface is 0.999 MPa. The coating with a dosage of 0.8 kg·m-2 decreases the British Pendulum Number (BPN) of the specimen from 72 to 54. The wear life of the coating is approximately 100 000 times higher. The above results show that the developed coating meets the requirements related to the road performance of the coating.
